In the rising action of the book Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard Mare and Killorn are heading to a secret Scarlet Guard meeting that they are not supposed to go to. They are also heading there to retrieve the taken king, Cal. This scene is very important because Mare is going to suffer through another betrayal. This complicates the situation because she doesn’t know who to trust anymore. In page 97 the author states, “I’m sorry. He mouths, and the first Lakelander soldier appears through the window”. Killorn led Mare into a trap. This helps show some of Killorn’s real characteristics and emotions, he feels sorry for Mare because he locks her away. In page 111 the author states, “His voice quivers, as it should. The coward has everything to be afraid of, including me”. This shows Killorn’s real emotions and how he is afraid of what Mare might to to him. He feels guilty because he betrayed her and now she is held captive. This is significant because Killorn was Mare’s best friend, someone she trusted. This someone betrayed her and now she is held captive. This is the reason Mare has trust issues.

In the book Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard the main conflict starts off when the main character Mare has is now running away because she is now a fugitive to her country. She is a Red blood with powers she is not supposed to have so now the king of this country is after her. This is the main conflict because running can affect all of the Reds surrounding her. This is a problem because those Reds can get killed for helping her. Since Mare was betrayed once already she trying to trust people but she can’t find herself to do it. Because she does not went to get caught she is trying to be very careful on who she trusts. The is internal because she is trying to trust people but she can’t do it, she feels that she’ll get betrayed again. On page 21 Mare states, “Don’t lie to a liar, and Maven is the grandest liar of all”. Mare is still caught up on how Maven betrayed her so that’s why she can’t trust anybody. On page 63 it states, “I’m safer than I’ve been in days, surrounded by the people I love the most, and yet I’ve never wanted to cry more. For them, I hold back. I curl inward and bleed alone, inside, where no one else can see”. Mare wants nothing more but to cry. Yet she keeps it all inside so that her family members can’t see. This is inner because she doesn’t want her family to see how broken she really is.
In the book called Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard one of the main characters is Mare Barrows. Mare is a Red human with silver powers which means she has electricity powers. Cal is another main character who was a former prince. Another main character is Farley who is captain of the scarlet guard and also Kilorn who is Mare’s best friend. These characters are very important because they are the one’s who help carry out the story and are all connected back to Mare. Mare is a very brave character because she has to go against all of these soldiers. I would say she is dynamic because in the previous book she is now different. Now Mare does not trust anyone because of her betrayal. According to page 6 Mare states, “I want to believe in the Scarlet Guard, and certainly in Shade and Killorn, but I won’t let myself, not after the mess my trust, my blindness got us into”. Cal is also a dynamic character because before he was brave now he is still brave but is careless and sad. According to page 4 Mare states, “In contrast, Cal sits quietly, almost peaceful. Though he has the most to fear-chained, surrounded by enemies, hunted by his own brother-he looks serene”. Farley is static because she is fearless and always serious because she takes her mission as a captain very serious. She is who helps out Mare when she is being hunted down. Killorn is very brave because he joined the Scarlet guard which is a very dangerous group to be in because they get hunted down. He is a dynamic character because before he was a happy teenager with a goofy attitude but now he is more serious since Mare has also changed.
In this story trust is a big theme but can you also play by the rules. One way trust is explored is when Mare trusts her family with her secret and when she trust Maven with the secret of being part of the Scarlet Guard. When Mare is made into a princess she doesn't get to see her family at all because that is a rule that is put so that no one finds out she has powers. Prince Cal tells her she can see her family as long as they are quiet, “My siblings nod as well, swearing to be silent”(160). Now Maven has to trust her family not to tell anyone about her powers. If her family tells anyone she will get killed and they will also get killed. Going to the end of the story the Scarlet Guard has planned to attack at some tunnels. Mare has to make the tough decision of making Prince Cal make a decision between her or turning her in. He turns her to her father but Queen Elara kills the king and blames it on Cal(341). Since Mare and Maven are in the Scarlet Guard they have to get executed. But Maven is a prince so he betrays Mare and she gets blamed. She trusted him and he betrayed her. Mare learned that you can’t trust people you don’t know. This can be used in the real world because people have to be careful of who they trust.
In the book Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard an important scene is when the royal find out that Mare has powers she is not supposed to have because she has red blooded. This is a huge conflict because red bloods are considered weak because of their lack of powers. Since she is a red with powers the royal family rips her from her own world and makes her become something she does not want to be, “It sounds less like a pardon and more like a death threat”(87). This is very difficult because no one can know she is a red blood with power because this will create chaos in the world. This helps create the theme of trust. In this case trust is a big part because Mare has trust that the king won’t kill her because she is different. This creates a inner conflict with Mare because she can’t believe that she has powers,”This is a nightmare. I’m being locked away for the rest of my life, forced into being something else. Into being one of them”(86). This scene takes place in the rising action because this is how all the conflict starts out get complicated. Mare does want be someone she is not, she thinks that Silvers are evil. My question for this is will anyone one find out she is a red with powers?
The main conflict in this story is that Mare, a Red, discovered that she had powers. But since she is Red it is bad for her because she is not supposed to have powers. The problem is that Mare can’t go around with powers so Queen Elara announced to the public that Mare was a lost child of the upper class, “Lady Mareena Titanos, born to Lady Nora Noelle Titanos and Lord Ethan Titanos, general of the Iron Legion. Heiress to House Titanos. Mareena Titanos”(pg 88). Mareena is upper class so she has to marry Prince Maven, Prince Cal’s brother, so she isn't suspected. Since Mare is an actual Red blood and she has to wear makeup because Silvers are really paled skinned. If she shows her real blood color she can get killed because she has powers. When she was training a girl named Evangeline got jealous of her so she challenged her to a fight. Evangeline’s power is called Magnetron which is controlling metal. This is bad for Mare because if a knife cuts her the Silvers are going to find out that she is Red blood. Into the battle Evangeline starts throwing knifes and cuts Mare, but before anyone can find out Maven takes her to be healed, “I turn into Maven letting him walk me from the training room”(pg 206). Mare’s battle is both internal and external because she has to fight Silvers that can expose her, but at the same time she is afraid she will expose herself. Her problem doesn’t necessarily affect those around her she more like helps them because she is now upper class, “I want my brothers brought home from war. For once, I feel like I’ve said something right”(pg 87).
In the book Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard there are two different types of people in the society, the silvers and the reds. The Silvers are thought to be more superior because they have different powers that make them unique so they are the wealthiest. The Reds are low in society because they are normal people and they aren't supposed to have powers. Mare Barrow, the main character, plays the role of a low Red, Kilorn Warren is also a low Red, and Cal Tiberias is the prince of their kingdom. Mare is important because she discovers a powers that she’s not supposed to have because she is not a sliver. Kilorn is important because he is Mare’s best friend and knows everything about her. Prince Cal is important because he got Mare a job that got her involved into a huge problem. Mare is a fearless and short tempered but puts herself at risk to keep her family out of poverty, it states, “The merchants are distracted, careless, and it’s easy for me to take whatever I want from their wares. By the time I’m done, my pockets bulge with trinkets and I’ve got an apple for the road”(pg 1). Prince Cal was different then most of the silvers because he has different views of how to handle situations unlike his parents. His step mom, the Queen Elara, suggests to kill Mare but Cal disagrees by quietly clenching his fist(pg 83). He does not agree with the way his parents fix situations but he can’t do anything to go against them since he is the heir to the throne after his father. Kilorn is a thief but only because his father died in the war and his mother abandoned him when he was young and that is how he survives alone, by stealing. His only family is Mare and her family(pg 3).
